Commemorative Medallion Series


 

In mid-1961, Bob printed a pamphlet explaining what his purposes for this project were.
This is the front cover. In it he stated the following:
"This continuing series of sterling silver medallions is a special project initiated " by a collector, For collectors". Its aim is to carry on the fine tradition of the (now defunct) commemorative half dollar series, with three uniform half dollar-diameter medallion issues annually, marking events or anniversaries of real significance to the American heritage.

The project is supported by fellow collectors thru advance subscription, and will continue on the same basis it started in 1959 so long as this support continues.

Three vital ruling principles govern the operation of the project. These are that (1) no effort is spared in securing flawless production of pieces of high artistic merit, with (2) distribution arranged to maintain true numismatic values foremost, at (3) lowest possible pricing, so that even junior collectors can participate.

Artistic Merit: Today�s fine medallic quality is secured in only one way, which is sound, imaginative design, rendered into a large, perfected three-dimensional bas relief model by a skilled sculptor, which is then patiently and accurately reduced to die steel by a skilled craftsman operating precision machinery. This is almost in the nature of a lost art, being practiced by only a few private establishments and key mints the world over. It is the hard way and the expensive way, but its merits are immediately apparent by simple comparison with token-type pieces made cheaply by so many sources. To maintain the highest standards, all of the 30-odd creative and production steps from the initial sketch to final striking are supervised and operated by Heraldic Art.

Numismatic Value: This series is carried on for the enjoyment of the broadest number of collectors, without the unbalanced distribution and resultant heavy speculation which have affected so many branches of numismatics in recent years, to the detriment of the "old fashioned" pleasures of collecting.

This means that issues are strictly limited, with the quantity struck sufficient for the needs of serious collectors, but not enough to permit distribution to roll collectors and speculators. Distribution is handled by direct mail sale only, to insure against quantity sales to any individual or dealer.

Many collectors wish to display two sides in an exhibit case, or to buy for friends as gifts. Small multiple orders are acceptable, but, in keeping with the spirit of the program, it is urged that you order for your basic requirements. Absolute limit is 10 pieces per issue, set mainly for the benefit of dealers (serving collectors unaccustomed to mail ordering) to whom no discount is possible from the low uniform prices set for all.

Issues are not publicized outside of the numismatic field (in spite of "greater sales" which might be achieved). Quantities struck are in exact accordance with the totals listed on description sheets, and serially numbered envelopes are used. No other strikings than in solid sterling silver (and in the past, gold) are made; there are no changed dates, "stars" or altered die varieties to change or extend any issue; when an issue is complete, dies are face marked for museum presentation, or completely destroyed.

Pricing: The medallions, 262 grains of .925 fine silver, are uniformly priced at $3.25 for a single piece or $3.00 for two or more pieces of the same issue, mailed together, postpaid and accompanied by a descriptive folder for each piece. Air mail handling is optional at 7� additional per piece.

This modest pricing is channeled directly to production costs, and does not include allowances for a large office staff or lavish advertising. To carry on at these levels, your cooperation is urgently required to minimize secretarial, bookkeeping and overhead costs by (1) cash, check or Postal MO orders only; credit shipments and billing cannot be handled as a matter of pure economics, without reflecting on anyone�s credit standing; (2) consistent use of pre-addressed subscription reservation mailing labels (issued in your name with your first order, and at year�s end thereafter) to order upcoming issues, and (3) timely ordering by indicated deadlines so that follow up is not necessary to correct oversight.

Subscription Plans: Two subscription plans are offered to simplify ordering, both involving the booklet of pre-addressed issue ordering labels prepared for each subscriber. Issuance of the labels

Reserves advance prices for you up to the ordering deadlines printed thereon (orders due two weeks in advance of issue mailing date).

Annual Subscription, Plan 1: Return the full set of the year�s labels with appropriate remittance, guaranteeing automatic receipt of succeeding issues in matching serial numbers, without the need for further checkwriting or correspondence. Subscriber�s Receipt issued.

Issue Subscription, Plan 2: Return labels with remittance issue-by-issue as noted; issue orders not acknowledged. Matching serials continued if possible, but not guaranteed.

It is the responsibility of the purchaser to maintain his standing by one of the two plans, and special personal notice of impending issues is not possible. Orders received subsequent to deadlines will be filled so long as pieces are available, but special limitation of quantity may be necessary, as quantities struck are based on advance subscription, plus a nominal amount to accommodate new subscribers, up to the time of the succeeding issue.

Issues thus far have been in the 5,000 to 7,500 range, and further strikings will probably not go far beyond that range. It should be noted, though, that care in distribution, assuring initial absorption into collections, means much more than any absolute quantity in determining numismatic desirability. Prices reached by the relatively few earlier pieces which have changed hands attest to the efficiency of distribution . . . those seeking earlier pieces have to "pry" them away from other collectors, who, presumably, have just as much reason or desire to keep them as the buyer has to want them.

Please note, that until sold out, all pieces are sold at the standard price . . . once gone, we cannot help out as we do not deal in these pieces after initial sale. Want ads in the numismatic papers are recommended as the best way to try to track down wanted issues.

A L A S K A  S T A T E H O O D

History: With great national anticipation, President Eisenhower proclaimed Alaska the 49th state on Saturday, January 3, 1959 at 12:02 p.m. (EST), the first new state in 47 years! An executive order was signed directing that its star would be officially added to the flag on the July 4th following, and that the order of the stars would be 7 rows, each of 7 stars.

Obverse: Portrait of William Henry Seward, (1801-72), Secretary of State under Presidents Lincoln and Johnson, who was the architect of Alaska�s purchase from Russia in 1867 for $7.2 million. The transaction was labeled "Seward�s Folly" by his political detractors. To the left of the portrait, a great Alaskan (Kodiak) bear, the world�s largest carnivore, seated before a pine-bordered lake, symbolic of Alaska�s land resources: timber, mining, trapping and agriculture in it�s more temperate southern area. To the left, a polar bear before an iceberg, symbolizing Alaska�s sea resources: sealing, fisheries, and the Artic regions. Above, Polaris, the "North Star", soon to be the 49th in the U.S. flag.
